Creation Care

Creation Care at BCC

Beginning in 2019 a small group of Bellingham Covenant Church people began exploring the paths followers of Christ can take to better care for God’s creation—our environment. Convinced that creation care (CC) is one of God’s great commissions to humankind (Genesis 1: 27-31), we continue to seek practical ways to better care for our planet and help our church community grow in “creation caring.”

Some of the activities the Creation Care Team has engaged in include:

  • Sponsoring Life Together (Sunday School) classes

  • Leading local hikes and educational field trips

  • Joining with community and other non-profit agencies doing environmental restoration projects

  • Maintaining an interpretive trail on church land

  • Hosting nature play dates for church youth and parents

  • Serving local refugees through ecology enrichment lessons

  • Sponsoring guest speakers and teachers

  • Visiting nearby creation care ministries north and south of the US/Canada border

  • Hosting book and movie discussions

It’s been exciting for us to learn more about what the Bible has to say about creation and how we are called by God to care for it. Fortunately, there are many wonderful people and resources on this topic both in our own community as well as around the world. We will try to keep this site up to date with links to what we consider some of the best information.

In 2022 the CC team hosted four nature play dates that included lessons looking for arthropod life.

How BCC partners with other organizations

It’s our belief that we are most effective when we look for what God is already doing through others in our community, and work with them. For this reason, we are committed to:

  • Serve, whenever possible, alongside other organizations/individuals in our community

  • Serve low-income or marginalized populations where we have the opportunity

  • Help restore non-human creation through clean-ups, invasive plant removal, and other service projects

  • Provide our congregation with hands-on service opportunities, especially those that can engage our students and children

  • Provide links to creation care resources that can help our congregation grow in understanding what it means to be good stewards of God’s world
