From Your BCC Library

By Nancy Henderson

And suddenly it’s autumn! The longer evenings of this season offer time to enjoy a good book, or two, or three, or…. So as promised last month, we are delighted to introduce several more books new to our lovely library.

Have you ever considered how messed up our world is and wondered how you could deal with it? We definitely live in a crooked world of ideas elevated by crooked people. Left to our crooked nature, we can never truly understand what God has planned for us and His world. Yet God has not left us without a corrective solution. He has given us a reliable reference point—the Bible—so we can identify the crookedness and straighten it. Gary DeMar’s Thinking Straight in a Crooked World is designed to identify the bends in the road of ideas and repair them with biblical thinking. Interested? You’ll find it in the Christianity and Culture section.

Craig Loscalo’s Apologetic Preaching [sic]: Proclaiming Christ to a Postmodern World seems an intentional sequel to Gary DeMar’s book. Far from our idea of an apology, apologia means a defense for the faith. Whether preaching from a pulpit, helping believers understand the essentials of their faith more deeply, or reaching out to unbelievers or seekers, the author “shows and tells concretely how to communicate clearly and compellingly.” In this book ”for everyone who wants to proclaim the certainty of God’s Word in an era of change,” you’ll discover what it means to proclaim mystery in an age of information, hope in an era of skepticism, confidence in a time of doubt, truth in a climate of relativism, and Jesus Christ in a postmodern world. This book, too, can be found in the Christianity and Culture section.

In Shattered Dreams: God’s Unexpected Path to Joy, author and counselor Larry Crabb helps readers “learn how to look through life’s tragedies and see the lavish blessings God has for” them. He reminds us that “shattered dreams are never random. They are always a piece in a larger puzzle, a chapter in a larger story. The Holy Spirit uses the pain of shattered dreams to help us discover our desire for God, to help us begin dreaming the highest dream.” He wraps insights around the bold story of Naomi in the book of Ruth to help us gain an unforgettable picture of how God uses shattered dreams to release better dreams and a more fulfilling life for those He loves. Shattered Dreams can be found in the Christian Living section.

Streams of Living Water: “In this landmark work, Richard J. Foster examines the ‘streams of living water ’–the six dimensions of faith and practice that define Christian tradition. He illuminates the enduring character of each tradition in the midst of constantly evolving faith and shows how a variety of practices, from individual study and retreat to disciplines of service and community, are essential elements of growth to maturity. Foster examines the unique contributions of each of these traditions and offers as examples the inspiring stories of faithful people whose lives embodied each of these ‘streams’”. If this appeals to you, you can find it in the Christian Living section.

We wish you a relaxing, rewarding reading experience this autumn.
