BCC Lead Pastor Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the lead pastor position at Bellingham Covenant Church. 

We are looking for someone who is gifted at preaching and teaching Scripture with loving boldness in a way that is both theologically sound and culturally relevant, and who is passionate about equipping and empowering others to do the work of ministry.

Transition Overview


On July 9, 2018, Paul Petersen announced to the Lead Team his desire to complete his role as Lead Pastor at BCC effective January 31, 2019.  The lay leadership team honors and supports Paul in this decision, as it has come out of obedience to what he has discerned to be God's will in his life at this time.

In this season of transition, the Leadership Team and Search Committee will be working with Bellingham Covenant Church staff to make sure our communication to the congregation is clear. To that end, in addition to in-person announcements and emails, we plan on updating this page regularly with important dates and information as we go through this process.

If at any point you have questions, concerns, or just thoughts you want to share, please feel free to email transition@bellinghamcov.org. It will be read by a member of the leadership team and, if necessary, forwarded to the right person.


Search committee updates

The role of the Search Committee is to listen to God and the congregation in order to discern a candidate for Lead Pastor to present to the congregation for approval.

The following timeline graphic will be updated as the search process progresses. This timeline graphic is also displayed in hard copy poster format at Bellingham Covenant Church.

Along with the website and poster display, Search Committee communication updates will be provided during Sunday services, church bulletin updates and emails on a regular basis.

Communication Update | October 6, 2019

Current Step Update 

The Search Committee posted the Lead Pastor position in August and set a best consideration deadline of September 30, 2019 . With that date now past, the process is fully in the Discernment Phase and Review Step.

The current work for the committee involves prayer, discernment and review of the candidate applications and referrals. Multiple meetings are scheduled this month to continue in the review process. It will take time to review in working toward the next step of interviews.

The posting of the position concluded the first of three phases in the search process. The Preparation Phase, and first three steps within the Preparation Phase, are complete. During the current Discernment Phase, applications will be reviewed, interviews will be conducted and a recommendation will be made to the Lead Team.

Communication Update | August 25, 2019

Current Step Update 

The Search Committee has posted the Lead Pastor position during the past week (the third full week in August) and the application is currently open for applicants. The position is scheduled to stay open until September 30, 2019.

Two of the documents that were created during the Preparation Phase and are part of the application, the job description and and church brochure, are posted to the BCC church website.

The posting of the position concluded the first of three phases in the search process. The Preparation Phase, and first three steps within the Preparation Phase, are complete. Next, the Search Committee enters the Discernment Phase during which applications will be reviewed, interviews will be conducted and a recommendation will be made to the Lead Team.

Current Step Update 

The Search Committee is continuing its work and plans to post the position for applicants by the end of August. The work and preparation includes preparing the job description, church profile and a church brochure as application documents.

The process have served as great opportunity for the search team to work together, listen to the congregation, discuss and reach consensus on decisions related to the application preparation. The discussion and work in determining a clear picture of what we are looking for in a pastoral candidate has been good preparation for the upcoming Discernment Phase, which will begin once the application is posted.

Current Step Update 

The Search Committee is currently working on preparing the pastor application and church profile brochure for posting. The committee anticipates posting the position for applicants in August.

The preparation for posting the application during the current process step (Create Step) has included important discussion and work in determining a clear picture of what we are looking for in a pastoral candidate. Work has also included significant effort in developing and preparing documents for the job application posting.

Current Step Update 

The Search Committee is currently working on preparing the pastor application and church profile brochure for posting. This work is called the Create Step in the search process. The step will culminate with the posting of the position.

The work in the Create Step is informed by the previous step (Listening Step) during which the Search Committee hosted a series of listening sessions to help in discerning God’s path for us as a church. Thank you for your thoughtful insight and wisdom, and for engaging us during the Listening Step. As we move forward in the process, please know that we are all available for questions or ideas.

Covenant Regional Superintendent Greg Yee provided the three-phase, nine-step process outline for the pastor transition search process. The Create Step is the third step in the first phase (Preparation Phase) of the process. Two more phases follow during which we will vet candidates and select a nominee.

Current Step Update 

Covenant Regional Superintendent Greg Yee provided the three-phase, nine-step process outline for the pastor transition search process. The Search Committee is in the first phase (Preparation Phase) and is close to completing step two (Listening Step).

The Search Committee has hosted a series of listening sessions over the last two months and has begun the work of discerning God's path for us amongst all that was shared. The committee has nearly completed the Listening Step, and is now focusing on the third step (Create Step), which will culminate in formally posting the position application for applicants (end of the first phase). 

As we move forward in the process, please know that we are all available for questions or ideas.

Communication Update | FEBRUARY 24, 2019

Current Step Update 

Early in the search process, it is important for the Search Committee to develop a sense of what we, as a whole church, are thinking about our life together; past, present and future.

As part of the Listening Step, Search Committee members have been meeting with small groups and individuals for input and discussion. We have met with a number of small groups, and more small group visits are scheduled in the coming weeks. 

Also, on Sunday, February 24, Listening Post groups were held during the Life Together hour. We are thrilled that more than 50 people participated in Sunday's Listening Post groups.. We truly feel the spirit moving among us in this process.

There are three “phases” in this process; we are currently in the first phase. Once the Listening Step is complete, the Search Committee will develop a position application, complete with a profile brochure, for applicants. The first phase culminates with the posting of the position. Two more phases follow, during which we will vet candidates and select a nominee.

Connect with the Committee

The Pastor Search Committee has been meeting regularly since its formation. The search process is currently at the listening step of the pastor search process as we discern where God is leading us. Committee members would love to meet with interested small groups and individuals.

February 24th Listening Post Focus Groups

In addition to small group and individual meetings, the Life Together hour (11 to Noon) on Sunday, February 24th is designated as a listening post time. Committee members will host listening post focus groups throughout the church for a time of input and discussion.

 


TRANSITION TIMELINE

July 22, 2018 | Pastor Paul's announcement; leadership team will be available to field questions after the service.

September 9, 2018 | A Congregational Meeting will be held following the worship service at 11:00am where the Leadership Team will give an update on the Lead Pastor transition process.

September 16, 2018 | A meeting will be held in the sanctuary following the worship service at 11:00am where the Leadership Team will go over the results of the PULSE 2 survey and solicit feedback from the congregation.

October 7, 2018 | Deadline for submitting Search Committee nominations to the Leadership Team.

October 21, 2018 | Congregational vote and appointment of search committee members.

November 25, 2018 | Dave Benedict announced as Interim Pastor.

January 5, 2019 | Pastor Paul and Kappy's Celebration Program with meal.

January 6, 2019 | Pastor Paul and Kappy's last Sunday at Bellingham Covenant.

January 16, 2019 | Pastor Dave Benedict’s first official day as interim pastor.


Transition Process

Roles and Responsibilities

LEAD TEAM

The Lead Team, in step with the Senior Pastor, is responsible for the ongoing life of the congregation. The team works with the Senior Pastor overseeing staff, ministry leaders, the annual budget and building facilities.

During our transition period, the Lead Team will communication with the congregation regarding the transition and has developed a Pastor Search Process according to the church bylaws.

Our church chair, Elliot Ritzema, serves as a member of the search committee.

SEARCH COMMITTEE

The Search Committee is a group of nine individuals who will move through the steps of finding and calling a permanent Senior Pastor to shepherd BCC. Nominations were submitted for Search Committee members. The Lead Team selected eight individuals from nominations and the committee was established via a congregational vote in October 2018.

TRANSITION TEAM

The Transition Team duties have been completed - a heartfelt and sincerest thank you to the Transition Team for all the work that has been completed.

The Transition Team was appointed to prayerfully examine the needs of the church and work with conference leaders to seek an interim pastor, assisting the Lead Team with the process. Duties included caring for the current and ongoing needs of the congregation, reviewing and interviewing candidates for the Interim Pastor position and planning the celebration to honor Pastor Paul and Kappy that took place on January 5, 2019.

CONGREGATION

The congregation’s responsibilities for the transitional ministry include:

  • Praying for the process and selection of interim pastor and permanent pastor positions

  • Supporting the leaders through encouragement and full participation in the ministry transition

  • Listening and looking for God’s leading in the life of our congregation and community

  • Resisting the anxiousness to fill in or fix problems

  • Trusting God during the process of transition and the permanent pastoral search
