SAN FRANCISCO SUMMER TRIP

JULY 6-16

PHILOSOPHY OF SUMMER TRIPS

Here at Bellingham Covenant Church, we believe strongly in giving students hands-on experiences with their faith. This looks like weekly community gatherings, monthly service projects, retreats, and summer trips. Our summer trips are intended to get us out of the building and into a new environment—one where we can experience our relationship with Christ in new and unexpected ways. We currently have a 3-year rotation for our summer trips:

  • Year 1- In-Country Service Experience (Summer 2017)
  • Year 2- Denominational Event (CHIC) (Summer 2018)
  • Year 3- International/Multicultural Service Trip (Summer 2019)

The overall purpose of each summer trip is to explore with students how Christ is working throughout our entire world—and to invite them to join this redemptive work. This summer (2017) is our In-Country Mission/Service Experience!

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

This year, we are going to San Francisco for an urban mission experience.  We will be partnering with the Center for Student Missions (CSM) as we work with local missionaries and ministries that are already doing great things for the city!

HERE'S WHAT OUR GROUP WILL DO

First, we’ll live in the city – experiencing firsthand the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of urban life. Our housing options are located in the heart of San Francisco. We will eat at local ethnic restaurants and discover the delights of Salvadorian, Middle Eastern, Filipino, African–American, and other cuisine.

Second, we’ll learn about San Francisco – the unique issues and problems that city dwellers face and what God is doing to foster and further His Kingdom in the city, through the indigenous organizations that operate on the front lines of urban ministry.

Third, we’ll become part of the solutions for San Francisco – by offering our time, energy and sweat as we support these indigenous "ministry sites." CSM will plug us into a variety of hands-on ministry opportunities to ensure that our time in the city is spent supplying substantive help to God’s people in the city.

HERE'S WHAT CSM WILL DO FOR US

CSM supplies our group with a City Host (full–time and intern staff) who has been trained to handle both the logistics of our trip and help our group process what we’re experiencing.

HERE ARE THE RESULTS WE PRAY FOR

First, that your personal walk with Christ would change. We pray that you will be sparked to re-examine your life priorities in light of what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a hurting world.

Second, that your life back home would change. We hope you’d return to the Bellingham community with new eyes — sensitized to see the ethnic diversity and pockets of poverty that may have escaped them previously. We also pray that you would return home with a new vision for how your faith can impact your home life and community at large.

HERE IS SOME TRIP INFORMATION

DATES: July 6-July 16 depending on family schedules and interest level.

COST: This trip would cost approximately $400.00.  We will do one all-church fundraiser that would hopefully cover most of this cost.

TRAVEL:  We will drive down to San Francisco, staying in hotels or camping along the way…depending on the desire of the group.

FINALLY

Please talk this over with your family and spend time praying about your involvement.  I have taken countless trips with students over my 20 years of youth ministry and I have seen firsthand the impact these types of experiences can have on the life of a teenager.  I strongly believe that these out-of-the-box experiences give you real-life experiences that God can use to deepen faith and trust!

Thanks for taking time to read this!  If you have any questions, please let me know.
